The term signage is documented to have been popularized in 1975 to 1980.
Signage is nothing but a design or the signs or the symbols which are used to communicate a message to a specific group. It is usually used for the purpose of marketing or for the purpose of kind of advocacy. Also, signage is distinct from labeling, which conveys the information about a particular product only.
Signs are any kind of visual graphics which are created to display information to a particular audience. This is typically presented in the form of a way for finding some information in places such as streets and inside or outside the buildings. Signs may vary in form and size which is based on the location and the main purpose, from more expansive banner, billboards, and murals, to smaller street signs, street name signs, and sandwich board and lawn signs. The main purpose of the signs is to communicate or to convey the information in such a way that the receiver may make cognitive decisions which should be based on the information which is being provided to them. Signs may be classified in the following functions;
- Direction:- In this type of function, sign shows up the location of services, facilities, functional spaces and key areas like the signs posts or the directional arrows.
- Information:- In this type of function, sign conveys the information about the services and facilities such as maps, directories or the instructional signs.
- Identification:- In this type of function, a sign indicates the services and facilities such as room names and numbers, restroom signs or the floor designations.
- Safety and Regulatory:- This type of function gives warning or safety instructions, such as warning signs, traffic signs, exit signs or the signs which are conveying the rules and regulations.
